Green the Grounds.org is a public education campaign, a website, an informal coalition of people who believe in sustainable landscaping and in the ability of highly visible official residences to inspire homeowners to "green" their own yards and gardens. A campaign called "Eat the View" helped inspire the new White House vegetable garden (along with persistent nagging from Alice Waters and Michael Pollan), and Green the Grounds was created to encourage attention be paid to environmental problems on the White House grounds, as well as the grounds around governors' mansions and official mayors' residences.
This website was created by Susan Harris, a Washington, D.C.-area garden writer, blogger, coach and organizer, in order to bring together environmentalists, horticulturists, gardeners and designers to promote sustainable landscapes in these public spaces, and to spread the word about those that have already gone green.
To learn more about the origins of Green the Grounds, click here. It tells the story of that first call from Michelle Obama's office and how it led to the "Greening the White House Grounds" proposal, and this campaign.
